Ok so the heart, lungs and various other vital organs are placed in the ribcage to protect them. Why place the most vital organ in one of the most exposed places?
If it is a matter of heat then surely natural selection and evolution would have made it so that say blood conducted heat away from the enclosed brain?

the question should really be why do we have heads? the answer of course is to keep the brain in. the skull is the most durable parts of the human body. then they dig up bones it is the skull that is last to decay. the brain in kept in this super-hard structure so that the risk of damage is as low as possible. if your brain was in your chest it could easily be crushed or punctured. the head is not an exposed part, the rest of the body is designed to protect it. it's no accident that you can cover your face with your hands.

Because the brain is situated at the end of the spinal column.
The brain is also very well protected by the skull.

Actually the skull protects the brain. In mammels its usually up high for better vision
