Akita is a very nice place. It is on the northern part of the main island (Honshu) on the Japan Sea side. It has a cooler climate in the summer and a rather cold climate in the winter. Akita does get quite a bit of snow in the winter, so be prepared for bone-chilling weather in the winter. The culture is a little more traditional than some of the major cities. Akita's population is about 336,000. If you like seafood, you're in luck. Akita is one of the best places in Japan for eating crab right about this time of year.

If you studied Japanese before, you're in for a shock. Akita-ben (the Akita dialect) is quite different from the Tokyo dialect that is taught in language classrooms. The intonation is different and the words are very different. When a Tokyo person would say "deshou? deshou?" and Akita person would say "nda! nda!".

When you're there, keep your eye out for the 秋田美人! (Akita Bijin!) [Japanese people consider the women in Akita to be attractive, with their tall, slender form and light complexion...]

Hi roww1e.
Just looking online now and Akita is said to have a long winter and a short summer. It seems to have the beautiful traditional tranquility of 'real japan' that so many people look for. I know you will have a great time.
I am going back to Japan in 2 weeks and maybe I will see you there!

Akita is very nice, but cold! I think that if you are coming to Japan, a place like Akita that is rural and very traditional is a much better choice than Tokyo or another major urban area. In Akita, you can see the "real" Japan, whereas in the big city you don't. Enjoy your stay!

I** wish you to find the infomation which you seek.

I live in tokyo, and have never traveld to Akita (however, I traveled to Iwate prefecture which is next to Akita before), and also rarely have occasion to see the photographs taken in Akita,so it was enjoyable for me to seek the above links anyway. ^ ^
