I was raised to be tough! Don't let them know they've got you beaten down. I loved that song I think Carley Simon sang it. "Don't cry out loud! Just learn how to hide your feelings, Don't cry out loud just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings.I have lived my life like this. Has anyone else been taught to be tough and not to let it show? Just wondering.

Don't let anyone fool you with this statement, My ex-husband told this similar statement to my sons when they were little. I refused to allow this to go on with my children .To be told not to cry out loud, and hide your feelings, is setting you up, you have to allow your feelings and emotions to come out , or they will manifest themselves in a form of illness or something else. Why should you have to hide your feelings, does that make you less tough if you do? Having to show that your tough , doesn't make you tough , your robbing yourself of so many feelings, and emotions. You need to get in touch with you (smile), of who you are , what you feel , how you feel. Not being allowed to show emotions or feelings will leave you with a detachment of feelings , not feeling compassion for others, empathy or anything else. What type of society will we have if everyone of us were told not to cry out , and hide our feelings , pretty messed up world.

There are times for letting out your feelings. If you let everything build up inside then that's not very healthy. But it's also not healthy to just let your emotions get the best of you and take control. There's a proper time and place for things, and you have to figure this out through perception and experience above all things.

It is different on the sporting field, or in combat situations, but generally speaking, it does not promote good mental health to repress the normal expression of emotional states, as long as it is acceptable behaviour for the situation you are in at the time (you shouldn't be crying and flying a plane or negotiating city traffic, etc.). It also should not involve violence or provide extreme provocation to violence on the part of another person.

*Shrug* no. I on the other hand am a very emotional person and I hate it. Tears fall if it hits me. And I don't really agree with the statement. In a way it's good to be tough but not showing your feelings especially to someone who seeks it would be cold. I guess it depends. Both ways are good.

some feelings are meant to be repressed but some are not. majority of feelings should be expressed becoz it isnt good for you if you keep hiding it.

the song will fit if the bad guys of your life keeps letting you down, it's okay to show them you're brave and all that. but then feelings like, love, anger, frustration, sadness ~ these kinds of feelings are to be let out of your system. because mental health will be affected alongside with your physical and emotional health too.

i think there are times where you should keep your feelings to yourself and there are other times you should let it all out. keeping your feelings inside isn't very healthy.
