You are either being given the riddle incorrectly or not reading carefully.

It says:
Hungry and angry end in -gry. There are three common words in the English language. What is third word?
The 1st sentence is a red herring.

The riddle is actually asking 'What is the 3rd word in the phrase 'the English language?'"

So the answer is LANGUAGE!.

Edit:
Some versions of this riddle have more information, but the correct answer is always "language."
