Well, we have an OLD quartz heater that you can use in rooms to heat them up. Its the kind where you turn it on and there are two things in there that get hot and red and let off heat. If you put it on Low, one of the coil things come on, but if you put it on high, both come on.

Well I was freezing the other day so I put the heater on high. 5 minutes later, there is this LOUD LOUD BUZZZZZZZZZZZ noise coming from the heater that was 20 times louder than what the heater normally is. i thought it might blow up...i was so scared so i unplugged it as fast as i could.

I waited 10 minutes...and plugged it back in and it was going to BUZZ really loud again like something was wrong with the electrical system in it or something....but now (1 day later), its working like before but i leave it on low...im scared it will happen again. should i buy a new heater?????

I understand that they have new portable heaters that don't have the red coils in the back. they just let off hot air

The heat in your unit is produced by the electricity moving throught the coiled wire inside the vertical ceramic tubes in front of the relective surface. The buzz, which can get loud at times, usually depending on the start up temperature of the air surrounding it, is caused by the vibrations of the coils against the sides of the tubes. It usually subsides after the coils warm everything up in the heater. It's sometimes annoying for a while, but shouldn't be a cause for concern. Just don't use a space heater close to combustible materials. The new type heaters you're referring to have an element made of a ceramic material that seems to be perfectly safe, with a small fan blowing over it to distribute the air.

I would not take a chance with the heater as the small ceramic heaters are getting very inexpensive. I bought a couple at Lowe's a few weeks ago for 9.95 each on clearance. They don't get as hot on the surfaces as the quartz heaters and should be less of a fire hazard. This time of the year depending on your area you may find a good deal.

The small ceramic micro heaters put out a fantastic amount of heat and would do the job, Be sure it has a thermostat that can be set so the heater will go on and off as the room heats up. Also insure the receptacle circuit you plug it into is adequate for the amperage of the heater and make sure nothing can get thrown over it like clothing.

I would buy a new one just to be safe. I hear about a lot of fires due to them.
