It depends on your tolerance to pain, how tilted your uterus is, and how well the labor progresses. I have one friend that had 3 babies with no pain meds and she said "it only hurt a little", and others who said it was the worst pain ever. Plus there is supposed to be some sort of endorphin that kicks in naturally right after you give birth to make you forget the pain, so it might be beneficial to try to go without it if you can!

I think it depends on your level of pain tolerance. With my oldest daughter, I did recieve the epidural at 5cm. Problem was by 7cm. the thing wasn't working anymore. My labor was zooming by. It lasted a total of 9hrs. So even though it quit working at 7cm. in 1 hr. I was almost complete. At 5cm. I was also given pitocin to speed up the labor. I pushed without any pain meds. and because my dd was born so fast, I also tore. It wasn't a walk in the park, by no means, but with the right support system and staying focused on some sort of focal pt. and taking one contraction at a time. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. Although I did have a lot of back labor. My youngest was born 7weeks early via c-section, so I didn't get to experience a natural delivery there. Good luck, congrats and best wishes!!!

Have 3 children and had epidural with 2. The first one was terrible. Back labor and severe pain. With my epidural's they had me up to the bathroom within minutes of delivering. My legs were wobbly but I still made it to the bathroom. Then they cleaned me up and moved me to my room. I wouldn't go through labor without the epidural.

I had three babies without any kind of med. i thought I was going to die! I tried to pull one of my babies out. I obviously wasn't thinking right because of all the pain. My last one was with an epidural, I thought I was in heaven! The not being able to walk part is nothing compared to not having any meds.

i would say i is worse with out but it all depends on the person some ppl have different pain levels. my cousin has 3 kids and she had them natural every time no pain killers and she said it didnt bother her. she has a really high tolerance for pain, my self i would get the epidural, my tolerance is very low

I didn't get my epidural until 9 cm...I was MISERABLE! My contractions were coming one on top of another...no breaks in between, horrible back pain. I didn't choose to wait that long...the anesthesiologist was in surgery! I got it right in time to start pushing and am sooo glad I did!! It is really up to you...Maybe you should try it and if it gets unbearable then you can always ask for one. Good Luck!

i had a c section but i would say the epidural is worth the trouble of having to stay in bed for a while.

I WAS WATCHING A BABY STORY TODAY ON TLC AND THE WOMAN DECIDED TO GO NATURAL ON HER 3RD BABY. SHE WAS REGRETTING IT. I WOULDN'T DO IT. ITS NOT LIKE WE GET A MEDAL OR ANYTHING IF WE GO THROUGH LABOR MED FREE. SO GET YOUR EPIDURAL. CONGRATS
