During a spring training game against the Yankees, Mickey Mantle of the Yankees remarked as Pete was running the bases look at that Charlie hustle and he just kind of caught on from there.

Actually, it was Whitey Ford who gave Rose the nickame Charlie Hustle, as he was the pitcher who was on the mound and Mantle was in the outfield. Supposedly he walked Rose and said "slow down there, Charlie Hustle", when Rose sprinted to first base after Ford walked him.

he was always hustling......I remeber an All Star game, which is supposed to be a meaningless talent show...Rose came home from second and ran into the AL catcher ( Ray Fosse?) like a middle linebacker stuffing a halfback and knocked him into the middle of next week; ( the catcher) never was the same again.........a LOT of prima donnas ( 3rd base, NYY comes to mind) should watch films of Pete Rose........
