I really want to get into woodworking/carving, especially carving cool pieces of wood with a dremmel tool. Space is limited in the garage and stuff. any tips on getting started?

take a 2x2 board 8 feet long, draw on it to look like chain links. remove everything that isn't part of the chain. whittle the links apart as you go. when you get done you will have a very unique wooden chain. I have seen them sell for a lot. when you get done post again and I will give you instructions on the next step. be patient this is very time consuming

If you have to find nice ideas for woodworking i can suggest you to check here http://woodworking.toptips.org
It's perfect if you are just starting out or if you're a seasoned carpenter. you will like it for sure !
It has almost 20.000 woodworking plans and you have a CAD/DWG software to view and edit the plans. You have step-by-step instructions with photos and high quality blueprints and schematics. If you are a beginner this is the easiest way to start your woodworking projects, and if you already have experience you can anyway find a lot of interesting ideas!

Hi:

You could get one of the newer style stylus dremel tools. Those look great and very easy to use. Think about what you would like to try out - hopefully something fairly simple, and you might try to start with something that is fairly easy to work with. Try to get some scraps to practice on - you might try some of the freecycle groups. My spouse does a lot of woodworking, and I've been trying to get him to save the scraps to freecycle for kids for something like blocks or other people who might like to do something with it. Sometimes, he has really nice pieces of riff sawn oak - that is some beautiful wood. If you are in the metropolitan Kansas City area, there is a freecycle group on yahoo groups, and I'll try to put some wood out there sometime soon.

I would probably also try to get some hand rasps or other hand tools for wood sculpting. There may be some help at the Compleat Sculptor.

Hope this helps.

Go to a local hobby store. They have all kinds of wood carving tools are varying prices. They can suggestion the best wood to start using and probably has classes.

My Dad used to carve soap, which you always have around the house. He just used a pen knife. When he was done we kids had the koolest soap to use or give as gifts.
