ya know the saying "you get what you pay for"? what do you expect from some of these games? they're FREE!!! they can't be perfect!
You've got about 2 choices right now, and you may not like either one but here goes anyway:

1- Deal with the 'boring' ones that fit your "completely free online play" specs; or
2- Save up a little money and go out to the store...for about 20 bucks you can get diablo2 which offers free online play (it's older and not a MMORPG but it's still a good game...it also offers the ability to play offline and/or go back and forth between online and single-player and it has a secret cow level!! LOL); For about $50 you can get one of the Guild Wars campaigns (Nightfall is the newest and by far the best yet) and you can play till your heart's content with no further charges. I would not suggest WoW to you as it certainly does not fit your requirements...there's nothing free about it!

World of Warcraft is a popular one, as well as the latest Everquest game. D&DO (Dungeons and Dragons: Online) is pretty recent, and Enter The Matrix puts you in the Matrix online. There are some free ones, notably RuneScape, but they have problems with server speed, low quality graphics, and assorted glitches. I am currently playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and although it is offline, it boasts an almost infinite amount of quests and opportunities.

Final Fantasy XI is a pretty good mmo and is very community based, also I'm hearing Vanguard is going to be one of the better mmo's but is very stressful on your computer

depends on what you are looking for: popularity, price tag, genre, etc.

World of Warcraft is up there as being one of the hottest game in the market. Has a monthly charge.
Guild Wars is pretty good with no monthly charge.
There are others, depending on what sort you are looking for.
