My McAfee subscription is about to expire and I'm tired of spending money when there are free products out there.

If a product is free you have to ask yourself, how much protection and my truly getting? When running free firewall software, which is only software based and free, it is limited into it's functionality and options. For those most part they can be disabled rather quickly, with many known security holes by true Internet threats.

The key thing is understanding your software version of firewall and most that are free, do not have the functionality of Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) It's better to experience things on your own rather then listen to opinions on strangers online. A software and hardware type firewall is vital for added protection, do some research on that configuration and will truly see why it is mission critical for that type of system setup.
