Can you say 'Red Scare'? Obviously, the Communists in the U.S. of A. were seen as a potential threat to America. Have you heard of the Blacklists? The HUAC? These activities were similar to what happened in the U.S.S.R. at the time.

Historically speaking, since the US started to develop into the federation that they are today, each and every group of new comers was considered a threat to the existing political entity. Among the first ones were Catholics..., then the Latinos that take away the jobs from the American people... As anyone now is aware, Muslims are those who became the target. Even though the official discourse aims at those terrorists abroad, in fact the attitude towards Muslim people living in the US has dramatically changed after 9/11.
Of course, much more could be said on this issue...

The Japanese were once considered a threat. Have you ever read 'The Bracelet'?

Same with African Americans. Some people thought they were a threat to there jobs and would 'steal' them.

'Were'? Catholicism could fall into that category, with fears of catholic loyalty to Rome over and above loyalty to a secular (protestant) government.
