Tradition.
Coaches were originally considered players, wore uniforms with numbers and could play. Pete Rose was the last player/coach who actually held a starting position with the Reds. The Dodgers jumped into the game in the 80's by allowing a coach to pinch hit in a game. But with rule changes and limitations on how many you can have on a roster, specializations like Closer and Setup man in the bullpen there aren't enough roster spots to list a coach as an eliglble player although technically they could.

If you think about it, baseball coaches are the only coaches that regularly enter the field of play (pitching changes). Also, baseball plays twice as many games per season as the other sports (10 times as many as football), so their coaches have to "suit" up for games a lot more than coaches in other sports. And Finlay, wearing a suit in a baseball dugout, full of dirt, pine tar, sunflower seeds etc would not be a good thing

It's partly because of tradition, as way back in the olden days the players were also the coaches and in some cases the managers.

The real reason, though, is it's required by rule. Any team personnel that goes onto the field (with exception to medical personnel) must be in his team's uniform. Thus, the first- and third-base coaches must be in uniform, and the manager must be in uniform if he is to go onto the field.

Coaches and managers.

In the early days of organized baseball, players were frequently also coaches and managers, so they had to be in uniform in order to be prepared to play.

It just stuck.

Well, most other uniforms are either designed to be worn over significant amounts of padding, or include shorts. Most coaches would look ridiculous in either.

Baseball uniforms look more professional than basketball jerseys...just picture the coach with the shirt's armpits down at his waist...

Dunno..just a tradition i guess that got started early. It's easy to wear. It's look strange to see a football coach wearing a football jersey w/ all the gear, wouldn't it?

I think it is because baseball is played in warmer weather outdoors. And because of tradition.
