listening is done with the ears, some people prefer
to look away so they can absorb the words better.
it's also a good way to listen for verbal cues more closely

It depends on the person's personality. No eye contact doesn't always mean dishonest. It could mean the person is autistic( I have a VERY mild form of autism) has low self-esteem, or is shy. There is this one girl at my school who doesn't make much eye-contact. I believe she is shy and/or has low self-esteem because she's so quite all the time and doesn't ever come to me first to talk.

some say that this behaviour does indicate what you have suggested.
another condition a sort of mental illness that is not often very bad may cause a person to do that also . it is a matter of trust or fear. but the person may fear that they themselfs are not suitible for you to look at . meaning they dont feel good about themselfs.
no one should really accept that one clue is enough to determine the cause of any behaviour. human behaviour can be as complicated as it is simple.

I personally don't do it because I'm very shy and find it uncomfortable to hold eye contact with someone I don't know that well. When I'm lying however, which isn't often, I always look the person in the eye!

Some people don't look you in the eye when they are talking to you because they are shy or nervous. It's not always about trust or honesty.
Also, maybe there is a funny smell and they think you farted or something, so they don't want to look you in the eye or they will laugh about it?

I have to agree with the shyness answers. I do the same thing. I can't stand to look someone in the eye for more than a few seconds without getting extremely nervous. It's even worse when it is someone you have a crush on.

Well I don't think it's a self esteem problem.....boy! there's an over-rated emotion.....perfect example: the outtake reel from American Idol...theres self esteem gone wild !!!!
It looks to me like most answers were correct..it could be any number of reasons...the person you're talking to might be coc*-eyed and you don't know which eye to look at!

a. I think a person in the U.S. feels uncomfortable looking someone in the eye because socially they are brought up to know staring is not polite. They may also be shy?

It doesnt bother me. Maybe they dont look you in the eye because they are shy or it could be their culture. In certain parts of the world its rude to look someone in the eye especially if they are older than you. I just look at people's forehead when I get tired to looking them in the eye.

I just stare at their nose, even when their head moves. Most people find it really unnerving and can't wait to get to a mirror to see if there's something hanging out of it or on it.
