The point was that it glorified dissent. It was pointing out the flaw of a society that seeks to silence opinion of even a single person. Sorry, I'd rather live in a place where we hardly agree on anything than a world where a consequence of dissent could be physically or psychologically torturing anyone until they think they submit that they live in Utopia. I have no problem with seeking to live in a better place and making it better for future generations, but that end is better achieved through compromising differing opinions not shutting them up through coercion.

Why not read it and do a book report for us. In the absence of reading it, it was based on the struggle between the U.S. and U.S.S.R., "the Cold War" (or Capitalism vs Communism). The analogy does not hold today, since with the the Cold War it was nation against nation (and rational actors), ideology against ideology. Today's struggle is a "clash of civilizations" and members of the different major groups don't all subscribe to the same ideologies or have the same goals (just look at the Dems and Reps in the U.S., now picture all the factions of Islam spread over Asia, the Middle East and Africa).

I haven't read this in a few months...... umm. Well, it shows how people can be brainwashed into anything. Like now, the media does that in many different ways. People will always turn back on each other. At the end, when Winston Turns on Julia, that happens now, but not exactly like in the book. I'm not sure I really understood your question. I hope this helps

you DO know Orwell is an idiot?..and he writes like one?....he made up a place and made it a controlled state like the USSR or Bulgaria...scared the crap out of people and made them afraid of what "could happen" instead of paying attention to the real world...may as well get hooked on Catcher in the RYe while you are at it.....

Well, its like 23 years off. Why not tell your liberal indoctrinating teacher to ask non-biased questions instead of putting her politics into her "teaching".
