On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne, and his wife, in Sarajevo after purchasing a sandwich. Princip was a member of Young Bosnia, a group whose aims included the unification of the South Slavs and independence from Austria-Hungary (see also: the Black Hand). The assassination in Sarajevo set into motion a series of fast-moving events that escalated into a full-scale war. However, the ultimate causes of the conflict were multiple and complex.

Forget the Archduke. There was a lengthy time delay between the assignation and the outbreak of hostilities. The big event was the mobilization of the Russian army. This caused Von Moltke to tell the Kaiser that "the plan" COULD NOT BE CHANGED! Germany MUST attack France through Belgium. That made it a "world war" and not just a squabble between Austria and Serbia.

Everyone's covered it with the assasination bit, but did you know, The Tsar of Russia and the Kaiser of Germany didn't actually want to go to war with one another - they were cousins! It was internal and international politics and world events which forced them into it.
