It makes no difference in what you learn. You could start w/ electric guitar and go to acoustic bass and it wouldn't make any change. Just don't get a First Act...s.hitty guitars and basses...message me, and I can suggest some good starter instruments

an electric bass is about the size of an electric guitar and is heard through an amplifier. It is the easier of the two to play. an acoustic bass is pretty huge (i'm 5' 9" and i've played a bass taller than me!) and is acoustic, meaning the sound actually comes from the instrument itself. You can learn the electric bass without ever touching an acoustic bass. the techniques for playing the two are quite different.

An electric guitar is a type of guitar that uses electronic pickups to convert the vibration of its steel-cored strings into electrical current. The signal may be electrically altered to achieve various tonal effects prior to being fed into an amplifier, which produces the final sound which can be either an electrical sound or an acoustic sound. Distortion, equalization, or other effects can change the sound that is emitted from the amplifier.

The electric bass guitar (also called an electric bass or a bass) is an electrically-amplified string instrument played with the fingers by plucking or slapping, or by using a pick. The bass is similar in appearance to an electric guitar, but with a larger body, a longer neck and scale length, and, usually, four or five strings tuned one octave lower in pitch, in the bass range.

A steel string acoustic guitar is a modern form of guitar descended from the classical guitar, but strung with steel strings for a brighter, louder sound. Strictly speaking, the terms steel-stringed guitar, classical guitar and folk guitar all refer to acoustic (that is, non-electric) guitars, though some of these terms refer to different types of instruments (nylon-strung vs. steel-strung). The term "acoustic guitar" is a retronym, since before the invention of the electric instrument, all guitars were "acoustic".

My boyfriend can play all three, so it doesn't matter which one you start with.

There's the stand up bass and then your guitar style bass. Your basic guitar style can be electric or acoustic. Your mom has no idea what she is talking about. I think she has her guitars mixed up.
