My mom has no problem with me getting my navel pierced. Its just my dad. I don't know what his problem is and I think I'm responsible enough to take care of it.

And please don't say eeww or wait till your 18 JUST give me some advise.

Well, first of all, just lay low for a while. Don't bring it up or pester/nag him about it, because then it'll just become a topic of immediate friction between you two.

Then, when the time is right (also known as he's not busy watching tv or reading or busy with anything at all {a family dinner that's going exceptionally well would be good for this}), carefully and tactfully bring it up. Also, talk to your mom ahead of time and see if she'll back you up. It's always good to have another parent as an ally when you're fighting for something.

If you have previous piercings like earrings, and you've always taken good care of them, use this as an example to drive the point home that you're responsible.

If he tells you that there's no reason you should need it pierced because "nobody had better be seeing your midriff anyway young lady", (:-D) then tell him you're not planning on showing anybody anytime soon. Tell him you just think it's a neat thing, and it'll look cool with a pretty new bikini when summer comes around.

If he does agree, be sure to thank him, but don't sound like you're brown nosing. Then, when the time comes to get it pierced (definitely not before or it'll sound like you're bribing him and parents hate that), offer to pay a portion of the price. That'll show that you're grateful for what he has allowed.

Lastly, don't throw a temper tantrum of any kind because it doesn't say that you're mature and parents absolutely hate it if you're above two years old (and most hate it when you're two years old too :-D).

Instead, carefully bite your tongue and keep your temper, think through all of your arguments thoroughly and be sure that they can be defended with solid logic, and don't get an attitude if he says no right away. Just leave him be and tactfully bring it up again at a later point. Don't nag him and keep acting responsible, because he will be watching your behavior whenever he's around to see. Make him proud!

Best of luck!

Sorry, I'm with your dad. He's just worried and care about you. As long you're living under their roof, you should follow their rule. Just remember if anything (anything at all, like possible side effect/ infection) from the piercing, your dad will have to pay for it. You can do whatever you want if you already make your own money. He means well.

Do you have contacts? If so, it's the same thing. If not, just ask him if he'd let you have contacts; it's the same thing. Explain to him that if you don't take care of them, of course you're gonna have major problems (Infections and ulcers). Same with a piercing. P.S. if you're not 16 or close to it, wait a while.

lily-bab,

I have to tell you just as I told all 3 of my daughters. Wait til you are 18! You don't need to be showing off your navel anyway.

The son also ain't gettin a tatoo til he is an adult either!

hmm... well if you have anything else pierced (like your ears), and assuming you dont' have any disgusting growths or anything...
use those piercings as an example. also, name some things that you have done really well - - so it looks like you earned it.
