besides the obvious (lap top, beddings, clothes, etc). I'm looking for something you personally found useful or regreted not having with you .

Flip flops for the shower. A shower caddy (plastic basket to carry your shampoo, cleanser, etc. to the shower).

Ear plugs.

A desk lamp - the dorm ones are crap.

A fan - unless there is A/C.

A travel mug for your coffee.

An address book with all of your high school friends' emails and phone numbers. Make sure there is room for all of your new friend's info too!

Long distance phone cards.

Change for the washer/dryer. Detergent, dryer sheets.

I had written this answer when someone asked a similar question. Hope it helps here:

Towels, Twin XL sheets, comforter, pillows/pillowcases, Twin XL mattress pad, "egg crate" mattress pad in twin XL, under-bed storage bags or bins, bulletin board, computer, printer, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, lamps, laundry bag, nalgene water bottle, quarters for the washer/dryer, carry-all for shower/bath items, flip-flops to wear in the shower; clothes. If he's going to share a room, he and his future roommate should talk about the following before either purchases -- mini-fridge, microwave, tv, dvd player, etc.

Many sources also suggest a tool kit, first aid kit and sewing kit.

PHOTOS! Bring things to remind you of home, for those nights when you find yourself missing friends or family. Also, bring little touches to add to your dorm room, that way it truly feels like home, not some random hotel room. Lastly, I'd bring books, just in case you happen to have some down time.

A whole boatload of room air freshener. Your roommie is likely to be a person who only bathes during a full moon, and he probably likes to eat baked beans and cauliflower. Take my word on this.

Can opener. Seriously. You laugh now, but you'll see what I mean when you don't have one. Also, a gaming system --I've got a PSII, and I don't know what I would do without it!
