Age doesn't matter; it's the music. Some of my favorite musicians are now in their 60's and still kicking *** (John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, Ornette Coleman). As for rock bands, all of the members of Tool are in their 40's and can outdo nearly anoy other rock band out there, with the exception of maybe The Mars Volta and Radiohead.

There's an implied criticism in your question. What's wrong with band members in their 40's? Musical talent knows no boundaries such as age, sex, religion, etc. A musician in their 40's has probably been playing for 20+ years, which means they've got heaps of experience and (probably) talent. Being a certain age doesn't mean a person would be disconnected with their audience - as I said, music knows no boundaries.

it is cool, because usually they are seasoned enough to put out some great music. the only thing that is yuck is band members in their 40s acting like they are in their 20s, either with clothes or outrageous behavior. you want cool and over 40, think bono, think bon jovi, don't think aerosmith.
