Simply put, no. You're wasting your time learning acoustic because it is possible to get right into bass. I got right into electric without ever playing an acoustic for real and now I'm a big time songwriter.
Acoustic guitar and electric bass are almost 2 completely different instruments in terms of how you play them and the mental state you need to be in when you play them. The octave for bass is one full octave down from the A string on a regular guitar to the A string on a bass guitar and everything from style of playing to parts to play are different. I think you're mom's been subject to common misconception that all musicians need to learn acoustic guitar before continuing on in music.

Oh, yeah, it makes perfect sense. It's actually easier to switch from 6-string guitar to bass. I took lessons on guitar and didn't even have to do any lessons for bass at all; just looked up everything online and taught myself. The acoustic guitar teaches you the basics of the instrument and its variants. Believe it or not, your mum's actually right about this one.

Being experienced with the guitar can help you to learn bass, but it's not necessary. If you don't think you'll be interested in guitar, starting with an electric bass is fine.

what it really boils down to is , do you have the time to learn .anything you learn for guitar , acoustic , bass , electric , will help your over all playing ,
it will give you new ways of looking at it , open your creative eye a little more as it where.
and if it makes your mother happy .....do it...

nah, it'd help a lil but you don't need it. I play acoustic and electric guitar and my bands singer plays bass but he doesn't play acoustic guitar. He doesn't really know chords. He knows some music theory but he just sticks to the bass.

I did that. It makes bass a little easier when you get to it.In all honesty it really doesn't matter. I taught myself on both, but if you want a sense of security then I'd get lessons for bass. good luck! bass is very fun

I've heard that playing the bass is VERY easy. I think that if you learned to play the guitar well, transferring what you know of that to the bass would make it very easy for you to learn.

Certainly not necessary, but you might as well give it a shot anyway. Guitar is fun.

No, they are two completely different instruments, your mum would be wasting your time and her money.
