so is being in a union a good thing? I hear so much crap about these folks, but I also hear they are changing the world for the best..

Unions have done good for all of us. A few decades ago, 12 and 14 year old kids were working long days under bad conditions. Unions stopped that. Some companies try to show their strength by picking on the little fellow, but with unions, you have solidarity - and the masses can and do help everyone.
They were needed more years back, than they are needed now, but I would not work for some places without one. Other places, who treat their employees with respect, don't need unions.
One problem I see with unions, is that they try to protect the people who SHOULD be fired also.
In general, I think unions are a positive force in the working environment.

If it weren't for unions ...non unionized people would still be making nothing and working 16 hour days.True unions have become big business unto themselves...but if you worked for a company like I did..you'd be damn glad you had one. They will fight for you when you are right. Sure it allows some deadwood to be carried by companies...but you have that deadwood no matter where you go.
