Queen Elizabeth I was called the Virgin Queen because she never married. Was she truly a virgin? Hard to say, at this point in time. But as she had no official consort, she was referred to as the Virgin Queen and remains that way in history.

"Elizabeth I (7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603) was Queen of England, Queen of France (in name only), and Queen of Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. She is sometimes referred to as The Virgin Queen (as she never married)"

Because had she married (at that time) they would not have made her husband "The Prince Consort" they would have made him King. And she was going to be d*mned if a man was going to "rule over her." SHE WAS ENGLAND, not some man! So, the only way to stay Monarch or Queen and ruler was to stay single. This did not mean she was an actual Virgin, lol, just that she was "married to England and its people" in her mind and heart. She later adopted James of Scotland (he was Gay and had the Bible translated, the King James Version, so that people would stop gossipping about his affairs with young boys). And he was fond of the boys.
However, Queen Elizabeth stuck it out and ruled England alone as the longest reigning Monarch England ever had (even to this day). Queen Elizabeth II has like less than 10 years to beat her record. So, when she died, she was still unmarried.
However, when she took the Throne, England was a bankrupt, penniless nation with no Army or Navy to speak of at all. She went on to defeat the Spanish Armada (considered impossible at that time), defeated Mary of Scots (who had the backing of Europes Nobles (both Spain and France), raised the best Army and Navy in Europe that Europe had yet to see, settled land around the globe for Imperialistic purposes (purposes of an Empire), and many, many other things. The fact that she sat on the Throne for so long allowed England to enter a Golden Age of Glory which allowed people such as Shakespeare and others to flourish!

Elizabeth I was called the Virgin Queen because she never married. Her actual virginity can't be proven.

Queen Elizabeth I was never married. That is why they called her that but many people even doubt that she was a real virgin.

She supposedly was a virgin (I'm not sue though, she was known as a very flirtatious young woman). She refused to marry any man because of what she saw growing up. She often stated she would only be married to England. She had a couple favorites, one the Earl of Leicester and there has been controversy about the death of his wife, and the other later which she had executed because he disobeyed her constantly. She did love them both, but again was terrified of being under control of any man.

Because Elizabeth I never married. But if you asked me, I think she wasn't an actual virgin, it's just again back in those days virgin meant unmarried.
