Because our countries were not the treading ground of the battles. Even though France was the site of numerous battles, its economic infrastructure was left more or less intact b/c most of the fighting was to the north of the country. The rest of Europe was trampled by soldiers from one end to the other, and the result was that much of the industrial, agricultural, and governmental infrastructure was destroyed. When all that stuff's gone, there isn't a thing to build on, and that causes potitical instability.
