Canopy tram outside of San Jose, Tours can be arranged once there. Surfing best on Pacific North side.
Monetverde cloud forest on the North Pacific side.
Monkeys and Alligators ont he Pacific south end, I love Manuel Antonio area. Jungle tours by small boat up into the rainforest where the sea turtles lay their eggs on the Caribbean north end. I am a travel agent and been there 6 times. You will love the place but fly into San Jose and then go to the area that has what you are looking for. Check internet too for more info. It depends on what you want to see. The northern pacific beaches of Tamarindo are are nice and dry, lots of peole and partying, still good surfing and nightlife.

If your intrested in rural towns head to san ramone anf taste the real costa rica.

I prefer the area around mal pais and montezuma, cant go wrong there.
