ivermectin is your best bet and after that advantage. human and dog shampoos are lethal because the amount of the lice killing agent is too great for them to handle. the vet can give you the right dosage ( i believe it is half of a kitten dose).
yes, two summers ago my pig panda got lice. luckily he was under quarantine and it did not spread to the others.
if you can see it with the naked eye it is NOT mites. cavy lice is slighlty different from human lice. however, cavy lice are not interested in you and won't infect you.
clean cage with bleach and rinse thoroughly (2-3 times). put fresh bedding in the cage

First off, lice and mites are a common occurance even in indoor GPs. They come from field mice and storebought (or any really) hay. Not much you can do about preventing it but when it occurs, it can be easily treated. I will tell you how to cost effectively treat this condition below. Your children CANNOT get this kind of louse/mite. It will NOT spread through your home. If you left it untreated, the GPs would be miserable and most likely develop skin infection and distemper.
How to treat GP parasitic infestation
By Ryan
1) Remove the GPs from their pens and place in a disposable box.
2) SHAMPOO the GPs in HUMAN HEAD LICE SHAMPOO (not cheap but much better than a vet and an injected cure) and luke warm water and let SOAK for 6 mins (10 for human head lice, 6 minutes works on adult AND 4 week old pups without harm)
3) Rinse GPs and towel dry.
4) Clean cages with diluted BLEACH/WATER MIX. Make sure to RINSE the cages well.
5) Put GPs back into cages.
6) IMPORTANT: REPEAT ALL THE ABOVE STEPS IN TEN DAYS (if you don't the new eggs will hatch and you will have to start all over)
This WILL SOLVE your problem. Make sure ALL GPS you have get a bath like this even if they are not "showing" bugs.

I raise rats and they do get mites sometimes. I can't afford to have the vet give me ivamec. for 15 rats that's too expensive so what we do when we get them is to thoroughly bleach out all cages and toys ... and wash the lil guys. Then before we put them back in the cages, we soak each animal with baby oil. It is non toxic to them when they clean their fur..and it suffocates the lice/mites and they die. About a week or so later when the oil is pretty much gone from the cleaning, check the animal again and reapply if necessary. If not then re-clean and bleach the cages and shampoo the animals. One of the benefits .. they have really soft skin. But I guess that's not too noticeable .. unless they are hairless (as some of mine are)

My rat has had lice twice and my guinea pig had mites. I took mine to the vet. We had to take them about four times each. They got a shot every time. We also had to buy my rat and my guinea pig all new stuff so there was no chance they wouold get it again. The only thing you can really do for your guinea pig is take him to the vet. It is pretty expensive though. It cost us fourty bucks every time we took either of them. Good Luck I hope you get rid of his fleas.

Ivermectin is for mites, not lice. Advantage is for lice. I think you need to see the vet for this one. You can dose age home, but you need oral syringes to measure out the dosages, and an accurate scale in grams to calculate dosage. I think that vet guidance would be more helpful to you at the moment.

the final selection is as much as you quite. Fleece is greater much less high priced on the long-term, and greater appropriate in case you have long haired guinea pigs. yet, some human beings would locate doing laundry a nuisance and locate it gross to laundry your clothing with something that touched guinea pig poo. additionally, some guinea pigs would locate the fibers for fleece definitely scrumptious, whether that's undesirable for them in the event that they consume too lots. whether, fleece could enliven your section with its hues. in case you utilize fleece, positioned something absorbent on the backside, via fact the pee would basically leak via it. Carefresh is probable the final bedding around (that's interior the guy shavings style). It has severe absorbancy, risk-free on your guinea pigs to consume, just about odorless, no respiratory issues, and flushable. whether, it is slightly high priced. in case you're finding to maintain money, yet insist on employing carefresh, i'd advise mixing carefresh with different aspen/pine shavings to be much less high priced.

okay, its probably not lice, its probably mites, mine had it and we bathed it but it didn't help so we took it to the vet and she bathed in a special shampoo for small animals, so I think its best if you just take them to the vet, or ask for flea/tick/mites/lice shampoo
