A black hole does not appear black. That is simply the term astrophysicists use. You can't actually see a black hole. You can only see evidence that it is there, as in the motion of stars nearby.

You cannot see a black hole because light cannot escape from it. The reason light cannot escape is because gravity is sooooo strong not even light waves can break free of its grip.
