Probably your smile doesn't look convincing because smiles in pictures are not always natural, especially if you have to pose. This sounds funny, but practice in the mirror. Relax your face. Think about something that gives you a genuine smile and remember to let your smile reach your eyes. Show some teeth!! Laugh at how stupid it is to pose in front of a mirror! Whatever works! I'll bet your pics aren't as bad as you think either. Then, when you're in front of a camera, make a conscious effort to relax and give a genuine smile.

If you have a digital camera with the monitor that swivels you can turn it and take pictures of yourself and focus on what looks best. Try to figure out what it is that you dont' like about your pics. Maybe a bit of an angle shot is better than straight on. Take a whole bunch of pictures too. You can practice looking in the mirror and see what looks best to you also

Think of a really funny thing that happened to you and then think about that when you are getting your picture taken. Don't even worry about the camera. Just look at the wall behind the camera and think about the funny thing and let yourself smile naturally.

Well, don't MAKE yourself smile. Try to make it natural and you dont have to smile all the way, maybe just a little smile. Don't make your mouth too stiff, try to think of something funny, and you could turn your head slightly, because sometimes it just looks awkward when you are looking straight!! The day before the picture day, you can practice in front of a mirror.
Hope i help!

NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW HOW TOO SMILE.
try this , practise this all the time.
keep your mouth open just enough for you to put a dime.
smiling is an art you must learn how far your lips are apart, practise it as you are walking in a store watch the reception you get from most of the people you pass,
it works like a charm practise when your driving look in the mirror every-once and a while check it out you will be a changed person. your friends will ask if you had a face lift or just won a million bucks. one little trick i use is when i count to five you raise your head and look up just as i click the pic. man that is one hot shot. let me know how you made out.

Practice in a mirror until you find what feels comfortable and looks good. And hold the pose for a while, because what might look perfect at first, might not look so good after looking at it for a while. Also try different angles and directions. Looking the same exact way every time could get boring and cause you to not like it at all.
remember practice makes better, not prefect

Actually, that is probably only your opinion. Many people have some insecurities about their looks. I'll bet if you ask your friends and family they will tell you just how beautiful you really are. Don't force your smile. If you can't do it then don't. The majority of the TV personalities you see have learned how to fake it. Not everyone goes around showing their pearly whites like movie stars. Be yourself and you'll be happy.

Maybe you should practice in front of a mirror. Or maybe try not smiling just your normal face for a picture. Sometimes a serious pose looks pretty too.

i'm getting my youthful little ones to attempt to act like they're frowning in the front of the digicam, for some unusual reason after some seconds they commence to grin. something triggers the mind into making you want to grin. The more desirable sturdy you attempt to frown the bigger the smile you'll provide

Use a mirror to feel what a good smile looks like. Then practice. You can also take your picture on a webcam so it looks good before you take the shot.
