You need to work on your awareness of the ball, this is something that just comes with experience, so lots and lots of practise is the only way to improve.
Try playing lots of 5 a-side and indoor football which centres around ball-to-feet football and taking players on.
I find it difficult to take it round players as I am not that fast, but over the years I have improved immensely as my ball awareness has improved.
When I receive the ball i always have my back to the defender so he can't take it from me, then I wait for him to either commit to a challenge and tap the ball in the opposite direction so I can take it past him or dummy a movement in one direction and switch to the other.
People are always scared of getting hit by the ball so pretending to have a shot and then stopping at the last minute usually makes them flinch- again you have to pick the right space to move into so you can take it round them.
The only thing you need to do when not practising is to work on your fitness... if you are fit it really helps after the 65th minute and you can easily take it round more unfit players who are tired

Try having a look at the BBC football academy, they have a few movies showing you how to do some Brazilian moves to beat players one on one. Then practise, practise, practise! Try the new skills on your friends, in training whenever, but practise.
I guess it also depends on what kind of player you are, it's great to be able to beat players, but a team needs to be made up of different types of footballers. Every team needs a Makelele as much as they need a Robben or Joe Cole. Some players just don't give the ball away and use their positional play to get round players.
Good Luck!

Keep practising the FEINT. As you are closed down by a defender, keeping your head over the ball, without touching the ball, lean as if to go left or to your right and then suddenly take the ball in the opposite direction. You can practise with a cone or a stick or a friend. Also buy 6 -8 bamboo canes from your local garden center, go to the park, put them into the ground 4 to 5 ft apart, dribble in and out practising your body swerve.Good luck.

Hello.
what you need is a trainer who knows what he i doing. Even Beckham could not be the ace he is without a srtict trainer and an even stricter traning schedule. IF, YOU CANNOT AFFORD ONE, GO ALONG TO YOUR LOCAL COLLEGE AND ASK..
In England now you can take sports as part of a degree course, and tyou have to have 30% theory and 70% practice, get those scores righ and you are alreeady on your way to being selected to play for at least a low league football club, but you are going to HAVE TO GO TO your tutorials, and do the work, in the long run you will be so very pleased you read this and acted on it, and you really need me for a fan of yours, so you are doing it for me too, so get on down and get on up..... Practise makes perfect my friend, but there are some things that cannot be taught so recognize your strengths and aim to improve them.If you have pace then a lot of times you don't need a trick to take on players just knock the ball past them into space and do them with your speed.

Go to YouTube and watch the videos of different footballers and try and copy some of their tricks. eg. Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Okocha
If your a decent defender why not stick with that, dont get caught trying to do a Maradonna in your own area

You can try soccer schools. At ManUtd's soccer school you'll have the chance to take part in coaching sessions developed by Manchester United's coaching staff and first team. You'll learn to shoot like Rooney, pass like Evra and dribble like Giggs.

I'm actually a good player for a woman!! lol
... not in any official team or anything mind... But I follow it :-)
Why not check out your local club to see if they offer anything there...? Or try coaching some kids...?
(just spilling ideas off now!)

You could learn from the plump, scouse, master of close control, commonly known in Swansea as Magic Daps or LT10.
Go on youtube and type in "Trundle", theres a video of him showing off in the car park outside Liberty Stadium. Class.

i think sometimes that when i play football i accept that i cant do somethings, like i am crap at tackling as in sliding tackle so as well as attempting to do that i also look at the alternative - which i am good at which is not letting them turn me or push them in a certain direction...
in ur case, if it is too difficult to do what u want, as well as praticing perhaps dropping ur shoulder to shake of the opposition, you could just stick to what u do best and keep improving the qualities that already make you a good player!
good luck x
