because everyone has to spend more money than they make to prove their worth i guess.. vans piss me off too, ever notice how men in vans try to drive like maniacs? i think it has to do with trying to make up for the womanly conotations vans have.. i think it's hilarious

Possibly, beacuse they have a large family and can fit more luggage, more people in a large 4 x 4 than they can in a large saloon car. A friend of mine has a new Discovery which he can fit his large family in and still have room for a decent amount of luggage. How is he supposed to fit 4 kids and luggage into a Ford Focus, or even a BMW estate. Thats why. Even a Vauxhall Zafira or a Ciroen people carrier can be a little tight (so I am told), so people have to go for a larger car. Simple.
You don't often see the kids when the women or the dad is in Tesco's because they are usually at school.
If I had the money I would definetly go for the 4 x 4 option. But I wouldn't go for a Range Rover / Porsche / Jeep (etc...) 5 liter monster that does 15 miles to the gallon, I would prefer a smaller 2.5 liter 4 x 4 car that will do 25 - 30 miles to the gallon.
