I referred a family member for a job at the company I work for and she got it. Now, after a week she doesn't like it and is going to quit as soon as she can find another job. I've only been there 9 months, but it's the best job I've ever had. The owner's cardinal rule is honesty and I feel somewhat obligated to let him know what's going on, but then again it would cause a lot of hard feelings in the family, especially if she is unable to find another job and ends up staying. Some opinions, please...

Also, how should I handle things on the personal side with our family relationship? I feel betrayed and used, but she's barely speaking to me now. I really thought I was doing her a favor.

Don't say anything unless asked about it directly.

You should probably stay out of it now. If she does quit, you may mention to your boss that you thought she would be a better employeer than that. If she is talking about quitting after a week, she hasn't even given it a chance yet. You did learn a valuable lesson though, be very particular about people refer for a job, it may end up making you look bad. Just consider it a lesson learned and go on about your business and don't let it effect your work.

I think you should stay out of it. Yeah you referred her for the job, but she is an employee now and what goes on between her and her employer is none of your business. Its up to her what she wants to do and what she wants to say.

By not mentioning it you're not being dishonest. Now if he asks you about it then be truthfully. You should keep your mouth shut unless asked. She will tell him in her own time.
