We've had welfare reform in the past. It helps some, but it's not a solution.
The problem is that too many people are living with an entitlement attitude. They believe they shouldn't have to work and that the people who do work should give more towards taxes so they can continue to lay around and do nothing. The problem is also that the left leaning politicians want them to be entitled in order to expand government.
There won't be any turning back once the ones benefiting from taxation out-number those who pay taxes. That's already happening in France where the richer few are taxed over 100% of their earnings. There's no reason to work at all when the government takes it all to redistribute to others while taking their cut in the process.
It's part of the secular progressive agenda and it's taking over very fast. We may be able to stop it, but who knows?

I see what you are trying to say but that is not the answer. I agree with the answerers that say it helps everyone to have those programs in place. There would be a lot more crime to the working class families if there was NO help at all for the poor. You think it would make them work? I dont. There are not enough jobs out there to support everyone. If anything, the aid we send to other countries should be limited in order to cut our taxes before we limit the citizens of our own country. The system is abused, yes, but not every person who receives benefits is abusing the system. Would you take personal responsibility financially for anyone you know who is unable to work? I didnt think so. And realistically, hardly ANY of YOUR tax dollars are going to welfare recepients - I can almost guarantee you are one of the people who qualify for Earned Income Credit and don't pay ANY taxes at all. How would you like to lose that too? You cant pick and choose which benefits are cut if you are so set against helping the needy.
I AM SO SURE YOUR FAMILY IS NOT SUFFERING. Mine isnt and I have never been on welfare. Stop being SELFISH. And by the way, I am NOT a liberal. But I still see the need to help the poor.

I do see what you are saying, but in this case you are mistaken. Helping needy people helps you also.
I agree that they should pull their own weight. But if we simply let them starve things will go to hell but quick. If they don't eat, there is nothing to help strengthen their immune system. Hospitals will be overrun with sick and dying people.
And I know your immediate argument would then be to not let them in, if they don't have insurance they shouldn't be helped. I could see that argument (since you are still insisting its laziness that prevents their working at a job), but if you do that very quickly you will have widespread epidemics. Diseases will spread quickly, because no one is getting help getting rid of their diseases. Also, many of them aren't getting checked, so they don't even know that often that they have a disease. Imagine someone getting AIDS, but shrugging off the symptoms as the effects of hunger. They give it to more and more people and eventually it will get to someone you know (because in truth, you don't really know everyone you know--who knows which of your friends knows someone who likes the hookers, then they get in good with each other and somewhere along the lines you pick it up because you had sex with someone who had sex with someone who had sex with someone who had sex with an infected hooker who never knew she had it).
And of course, after the massive epidemics and hunger have seriously depleted our population; we then have to deal with countries who see a nation with a severely curtailed military (since so many were taken out the military will naturally decline with the population) and with an extensive amount of resources just ripe for the taking.
On the other hand, if we give them money (though we should do much more to make sure we are giving to the needy and not the greedy), they will spend it to survive. All that money goes back into the economy because it is being paid to the stores that provide food and clothing. Hospitals won't be as overrun (they are overfilled now but not overwhelmed) and they can provide both better care and to more people because they won't have to deal with epidemics or starvation situations. While the welfare and food stamp program should be streamlined and upgraded to handle their caseloads, their presence is more of a help than a hurt.

I'm on the same page my friend. As long as we have people who believe that it's governments job to try and make everyone equal by distributing our hard earned money through taxes nothing will change, it will only get worse especially if liberism keeps growing in power and conservatism gets forgotten. Sure we have those in need but I have always believed Americans are very generous people and if we take the government out of the job of helping the so called needy and let us on a local level take care of our own we will be better off. Government was created to protect us, pass the laws that we as a whole vote on, not micro manage our personal lives. Liberalism is about the same as socialism and I hate to see it continue to gain power in our country for many reasons but one of the biggest is they don't live in reality. To try and tax a country into prosperity is like telling a man standing in a large bucket to pull himself up by the handle. Ok I'll quit ranting...lol

You tell it like it is girl... I think the same as you, I know a girl that has three degrees and will not use them because she would lose her welfare privileges.. The Bad thing about it is she got the degrees while on welfare.. Now she's thinking about moving to a neighboring state because she qualifies for more money and a NEW bigger home... I hope people are reading this I'm also sick of seeing people show up for welfare get out of their Cadillac go in wearing high priced clothes and applying for benefits.. sick

What you should really care about is the billions being spent on Iraq when Iraq never attacked America. Do you care about the billions being given to various nations around the world while people in America starve?
If we stopped trying to feed, clothe, and economically aid the world, there would be more than enough money to help the needy people of America and we could still lower taxes.

That's a good idea and I wish it worked that way, but you have to look at it like this. What would happen if you were unable to work because you lost your job? It would be there to help you too. It was originally constituted as a supplement until the person receiving it could find employment, but now there are people who abuse the system and live off of it without so much as looking for a job.

Welfare funds must only be spent for those who really need it since taxes must be spent on other beneficial projects that must redound to the benefit of the taxpayers who tend to suffer from paying burdensome taxes.

The politicians who vote themselves a raise every 4 months,
who have the best & most complete health care, who can
hop on an airplane anytime they feel like it are using up more
of your tax dollars than welfare. That & their pet projects.
You wouldn't believe the things they waste tax dollars on.
They hide these things in little things called earmarks.

have you ever read the Bible?
why do Conservatives get all "scientific and uncaring" when it comes to their money...
yet most go to chruch?
Jesus didn't say "This is called nature. Get over it" to the lepers, the poor and the sick...
all I'm really hearing from you is... .me, me, me... and everyone else can go to hades...
hopefully, if you're in a situation where you need help... those around you will have the same attitude that you have...
