some great answeers here,I feel the fed government ,regardless of what happened in the past ,with other presidents, droped the ball big time.the feds have the money, the feds had the food, the water the needs for the people and failed them in their time of need.that means shame and lack of respect for what many now seem to say, well ,,,the high crime, trhe whatever, they make upseting excuses for ,,the feds goof...my problem is all the money Bush sends to the war machine and no ,he fails to tackle these type of isues at home, give money and means to our proud city, and our starving people.all over the nation, our children are negleted and seems to be aceptable to just compair notes these days,,with a who cares atitude.and pass the blaim,,,to anyone other than the right one...if we Americans gave a hoot for the city ,it would be in its glory now,not in the slum of secound hand thoughts as it is now...I blaim the government our commander in chief, not ray naigen as he tried to get the help.cheers

This is an unfair "question," and it polarizes many people who have given much to New Orleans.
Just because some of us have opinions regarding who should be blamed for Katrina does not mean we do not care for New Orleans.
And Bush "cares about poor people" as much as any other President. How much money did Clinton give Homestead, Florida during that hurricane? 0

Well we are finally talking about killing our own people . Hollywierd , Los Angeles ,And before I finish people will have mentioned San Fransisco , Chicago, New York ,and Boston .
We will decide these people are to liberal to conservative the wrong color not educated well enough or just because they drive the wrong color car .
People make me sick and every day I try to remember that I only have a few hundred rounds and would probably not get far before some Nazi cop put a bullet in me as I cleansed the world of the virus destroying it . People contaminated with I said you need to do as you are told . As an anarchist I find people today most offensive and rigid in all their thinking but would not really want any of them gone . It thrills me to no end to meet and talk with so many lost souls who have no clue till I set them straight if they ask . Lead by example is all I can say .
Jimmy Carter did more then Bush by swinging his hammer and helped rebuild several homes along with his wife and friends .

As someone who lives in New Orleans, I must say that if the rest of America cares about us, it sure doesn't show. The 9th ward, parts of the 8th ward and Mid-City, and Chalmette are ghost towns. Most people have not received any money from FEMA loans, or the road home money. It seems nobody outside of the Gulf coast area is standing up for the hard working people down here. Some of the lack of response has to do with state bureaucracy, but federal entities have been implicit in tying the hands of the state government at every turn, from the day Katrina struck up until today.
To people who say New Orleanians need to get off our butts and take care of it ourselves, how do you propose we do that with no money? People are being told that if they don't come take care of their homes, they will be taken away. Insurance companies are fighting tooth and nail not to fulfill claims. The 9th ward is the poorest area of the city, yet more than 50% of 9th ward residents own their homes. We can't just pull money out of the air, and we can't just rebuild without any financial assistance. We are Americans too, and we are working hard to rebuild, but it is impossible to do on our own.
Edit: I know it's not normal everyday Americans fault that we have been neglected, I didn't mean to imply that, and I am sorry it came off that way. I am angry at the federal governments response before and during the storm, and their response to the ongoing aftermath. When I said "I must say that if the rest of America cares about us, it sure doesn't show" and "It seems nobody outside of the Gulf coast area is standing up for the hard working people down here" I meant that it feels like most Americans have forgotten about us, and no one in congress or the federal government is standing up to get our city justice. I know there are a lot of people who care and who are willing to help, but sometimes the hopelessness is overwhelming.

You are right, Seraphim. But, you can't blame all of us, because most of us are struggling just to get by. It is only those who are able to help, and choose not to, because they don't care, that should really think about their priorities. I could afford to send maybe five or ten dollars, if I knew where to send it to. But, how much could my little bit really help, unless lots and lots of other people also sent a little bit too! I think it is wrong that New Orleans has been more or less forgotten. Just as I think it is wrong that any disadvantaged individual or group is ever forgotten or neglected. When Society as a whole, finally and truly understands that EVERYONE MATTERS, no matter who they are, and what they do! Then, this world will be a decent place to live. We are all parts of God, and we are all one!!!!

Just because it doesnt get as much media coverage, doesnt mean nothing is going on down there. Sayign we Americans dont care about N.O is kind of like saying we dont like Mcdonalds. We love New Orleans, it gives us two weeks of drunken times every year.

We could do without most of Los Angeles. At this point a large subsistence tsunami would be a blessing to the country as a whole.

Well if Global Warming isn't the myth the Retardicans think it is, New York City, Corpus Christie, Florida, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Newport, LA, San Diego, Carmel, Baja, FLORIDA, Seattle, Savannah, Hitlon Head, Seabrook, will ALL be underwater in 50 years anyway, right alongside New Orleans.
I'll be high and hopefully dry in my beachfront condo in Phoenix, laughing at all the clowns who have deeds to land which is 30 feet underwater. Domed underwater living spaces anyone?
