Is there anyone out there that missed the cut off date by one day as a child and what it was like growing up being the oldest in their class or did you advance a grade later on?

My sister and I both started school when we were 4. We were just past the cutoff date, but they let us start anyway. They were not as strict back then.

I was mature for my age and did very well. I was able to sit still and was one of the first kids to read in my class. I graduated at 17 and did very well.

I can however say that being one of the last kids to drive was totally stinky. My mom also had the rule that I could not date until I was 16. All of my classmates were 16 in 10th grade and I did not turn 16 until after 11th grade started. That was stinky!

Boys especially benefit from waiting a year, and there are always kids who are held back. Your child will probably not be the absolute oldest in the class. There are advantages and disadvantages, but all in all I think that it is ok to wait. I do not regret starting when I was 4, but things may not have been so good for me. It was meant to be I guess.

I worked in a Kindergarten class and it was very easy to spot the kids who entered Kindergarten at 4, they were immature compared to the other kids, couldn't sit still and were ALL flagged to repeat. In terms of maturity (nothing to do with intelligence) most kids benefit from starting Kindergarten a little late so if you are asking this question because you have a little one missing the cutoff, don't worry about it as they will be better equipped emotionally to handle Kindergarten. Also, think how cool they will be when they are one of the 1st kids in their class to drive!!!
