Need help quick. We bought a new programmable thermostat for our upstairs. Once we hooked it up it wouldn't work(the furance wouldn't turn on). So my husband put the old one back on and now that isn't working either(old one was a digital) no power seems to be going to it. And it's very cold and icy here tonight and my baby is sound asleep in her room for now until it gets too cold. Help please

OK Not to sound stupid but what does a transformer look like? And where would it be lokked exactly on the furance?

If you did not disconnect the power from the stat by turning off the furnace disconnect before changing it, you may have shorted the transformer. Go to the furnace and using a small piece of wire, contact the terminal connections marked "R" and "W". (There is a door interlock switch which must be pushed closed also, you'll see it on the blower compartment door) When you make contact, the furnace should begin operating. If not, you have most likely burned out the transformer.

If the furnace runs when you do this, there is a problem with the wire or just plain bad connections at the stat.

Additional comment:
That's very good thinking Lance, you are correct about the doorbell xformer. I've been in HVAC 25 years and hadn't thought about the doorbell xformer for emergency use, I'll remember that one, thanks.

Further additional comment:
Try taking the stat off the wall and connect the red and white wires (or the two that were cinnected to the R and W stat teminals) together. This will do the same thing as at the furnace if the wire is not broken in the wall. If fthat doesn't work, you should call a furnace tech. They're kinda' expensive but it sounds like you need one. In the unlikely event you live in Columbus, Oh I'll do the work reasonably.

Did he turn off the boiler switch or a breaker when he began working on it? If there is no low voltage you may need a new transformer. That's what gives the thermostat it' low voltage (24 volts). If you can't get a new one you may already have a replacement in the house. Your doorbell uses the same type transformer and can be used in an emergency such as this.

he had to "turn something off" in order to work on the thermostat with out getting zapped has it been turned back on? are there the same # of wires for the new thermostat as the old? are the fuses in the panel okay . Are the fuses in the furnace okay? is the furnace switch on? and finnally is the door tho the furnace closed as it has a fail safe not to operate with the door off.

Also you may have gotten lucky sort of, most transformers are protected by a 3 or 5 amp car type fuse check it out.

Read the instructions, depending on heating system gas or electric has a jumper setting to differentiate between the two.
Hope this helps.
