If you have a cement driveway, salt will wreck it. Better to use cat litter or sand just to take away the slippery-ness. They have driveway de-icer out there for sale in a lot of stores that is for the purpose you are looking for that will not have the destructive results salt has.

Rock Salt

Rock salt works alright but good old fashioned granular salt works best if you don't have anything else on hand. Mix with equal parts sand if you have any to help with traction.

I usually buy mineral salt from the feed store for about 4 bucks a 50 lb. bag and a bag of sand. Both are more inexpensive than rock salt, kitty litter, and prepackaged deicer.

P.S. Kitty litter doesn't work well as a deicer (not nearly as well as salt) but works for traction. I prefer sand because as the litter absorbs water it dissolves and you track it into the house big time. Huge mess! Dried kitty litter is hard to clean out of carpets too...You have to use a steamer to get it out effectively.

I guess if you don't have the rock salt that is sold specifically for melting snow and ice than any salt that you have on hand would do it.

I use dried coffee grounds and they are great because when they are truly dry putting them on the ice they clinge on top of the ice.
You would be recycling, becaue they act like a grid making traction on top of the ice, they are pet safe and they do not and do not track up the house. I start drying coffee grounds around Oct after they are dry I transfer them to an empty coffee container. Just keep them away from the unused coffee.
