I'll probably be stoned for suggesting this, but read anything about current events or political history by Noam Chomsky. I'd highly recommending "Understanding Power: The Indispensable Chomsky". This covers pretty much all of post WWII American history, including our foreign policies. This guy spends all of his free time researching declassified government documents and has unveiled some pretty startling facts about our government's shady past.

My recommendation: 'FIASCO: The American Military Adventure in Iraq' by Thomas E. Ricks.
Also, 'Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy' by Noam Chomsky.
They're very informative and deal with very significant and relevant subjects. However, there are many other political books out there that you might find easier to read than these ones.
