Travel Mirror - YES, so you can see the baby when he/she is rear-facing. A must have.

Bottle Sterilizer - no. soap and hot water is fine. Boil them when they are new, then just wash them well

Bottle Drying Rack - yes. I stored empty bottles upside down on mine when they were dry. Strongly recommend

Dishwasher Caddy - I don't have a dishwasher, but I hear these are needed if you do have one.

Insulated tote - Yes. If you are going to be toting breastmilk, you will need to keep it cool. Similac makes a great one.

Bibs (do newborns really need bibs?) - yes. The drool like mad. the little cloth bibs are great. and when they start eating, you can never have too many.

Digital AND ear thermometer - I use the ear thermometer. I have the same one we use at work (nursing home) and love it....but I am trained on how to use it properly. Not sure if that makes a difference, but some say they are not accurate. it is for me.

SnugRide car seat - very nice. this is what I had and LOVED it. Skip the spare base unless you use the 2nd car a LOT. we bought a 2nd base and used it twice!

Strap covers - yes. they keep the straps from digging in.

neck wings - I am not sure what these are.

head support- get the kind with the small one inside the big one for when the baby is really little

full body support - not needed. blankets work fine

car seat undermat - nope, never had one

carrier cover - a must have for a winter baby

Crib Sheets - 3. one to wash, one to use, and a spare
Blankets - 2 nice ones.
Receiving Blankets - plenty. They get use a lot. and puked on a lot
Waterproof Pads - can never have too many. you can lay the baby one them, change on them, even bath on them
Sheet Savers - I had 2 water proof mattress covers.

Body suits - we used 1-2 per day
cap and booty sets - a couple
side snap shirts - itched my baby too bad to wear
pull-over shirts - only used til the cord fell off
stretch sleep N play - all the wore the first 2 months (so get plenty)
Cotton overalls - didn't wear
gowns - tried them, but she wiggled out of the bottom. other people swear by them. I would say 3.
socks - some thin, some booties
hangers - plenty. the older the baby gets, the more you need.

My personal recommendations:
A wipe warmer - those things are cold!
a bottle warmer - never microwave bottles
Fisher price Crib Aquarium - better than a mobile. my daughter is 10 months and still loves hers
A care kit - nail clippers, nasal aspirator, brush, etc
baby tub - we have the infant to toddler tub. she still uses it.
Hooded towels - Carter's are more $ but they are thick and nice. don't get cheap ones. they are too thin.
Car bottle warmer - a must have for bottles on the go

Travel mirror - it's nice to know what's going on with your baby while you're driving, but not essential
Bottle sterilizer - just wash your bottles in warm soapy water; I never sterilized them
Bottle drying rack - helpful, not essential
Dishwasher caddy - helpful if you wash the nipples in the dishwasher
Insulated tote - yes
Bibs - not until they are eating solids
Digital and ear thermometer - a digital rectal is essential. Ear is too unreliable.
Strap covers - no
Neck wings - no
Head support - yes
Full body support - no
Car seat undermat - no, we didn't have one and no problems so far
Carrier cover - no
Crib sheets - absolutely (3-4 at least)
Blankets - 3 light and 3 heavier
Receiving blankets - if you are registering for 3 light blankets then you won't need these
Waterproof pads - if it's for under the sheet then get about 3
Sheet savers - never worked for us, our son just rolled off it
Body suits, etc - get about 3-4 each (you'll see what you prefer and you can always get more of just that)
Hangers - we never used them
Breast feeding accessories - I formula fed, so I can't really help you here

With both of my children, only a couple of people actually purchased from my registry. Most people are gonna get what they want to get you, or what they can afford.

Bibs are very necessary. I say this because, babys spit up several times a day, and it stains. If you want to keep the babys clothes in good condition, make sure he or she is wearing a bib.

I am 38 weeks, with my second child. I have heard each pregnancy, the list gets shorter.

The only thing I have, that is a must from experience, is the following:

car seat, head support, clothes, bibs, bottles, pacifiers, socks, lotion and baby wash, medicine dropper, nail clippers, thermometer, several receiving blankets, baby book, photo album, baby hangers, DIAPERS AND WIPES (get as many as possible).

I may not be listing a few items, but the above is going to be what you will mainly need to start out with.

Good Luck!

First, I would say you have some things on your list already that you don't need. Ear thermometers are not accurate. You need a rectal thermometer. You don't need a bottle sterilizer if you are going to be washing your bottles in the dishwasher. Yes, newborns need bibs...They start drooling and eating baby food before you know it.

As for sheets I always keep 6-8 in my house. It's tempting to go with cute pastel colors in sheets, but take my advice get darker sheets if you can find them. Babies drool, spit up and sheets get gross. I have 4 waterproof pads. The extras come in handy when babies get the flu or stomach bug. Then you can put one on top of the sheets in case they get sick...then you aren't changing sheets all night.

Clothes...I registered at Babies RUS as well and by the time people went to buy things the clothes I had registered for were no longer on the racks. I am not sure if you have large feet in your family or your husbands family but if you do buy one pack of socks and wait for the baby to arrive. I bought TONS of socks and none of them fit cause my son's feet were too big :) The best newborn clothes are the all in one outfits...also called sleep and plays. Carter's brand makes a ton of them. They are great cause your child can go out in them and sleep in them. I couldn't have lived without them

Breastfeeding. You have to have a boppy pillow. It's a must. How often are you going to be pumping? If you are planning on returning to work you might want an electric pump. If you are going to be pumping just once and a while go with a hand pump. Storage bags or containers. The avent company makes great containers that you pump into and then just attach a nipple right to that container.Speaking of nipples you might want to register for all the different sizes of nipples. Avent bottles are nice for breast and bottle feeding. They are great. Plus breast care items like soothies and other balms for your breasts. To help ease the pain of nursing.

If you haven't thought about it already you should register for things like diapers, wipes, highchair, swing, bouncy seat (I would have never made it without a bouncy), baby toys, baby health kit (nasal asperater, thermometer, nailclippers, and other baby aid items...babies RUS has a section of these kits), a baby bathtub,an extra base for your car seat if you have more than one car, burp cloths,Baby soap and shampoo, Gas drops, and last but not least a rocking chair.

Whew, seems like a lot I know. I know at my Babies RUS they had someone help me register and show me around. Good luck to you and your new little one!

I really don't have an answer to you question I think everyone else did a really good job answering! However, I am a nursing student and we just learned about thermometers and their accuracy. Some one suggested, get a rectal thermometer... NO DON'T DO IT. Taking your baby's temp rectally is very dangerous, and could lead to a perforation of the bowels! Rectal temps are not recommended for babies or children. Your best bet is a thermometer that will take a temp, in the axillary (armpit) area, or a temporal one! Good luck with getting the stuff you need!

I've heard that boppies (i think that's what they are called) come in really handy for breast feeding. its a pillow thing that helps support the baby so your arms dont get so tired.
