Best Guitarist is always going to be a matter of opinion. There will always be who is Better Vai or Satriani? Yngwie? Who is better from the older days compared to the newer days? Are newer guitarists better only because the equipment is better. Ideally, i dont think there is a Best of all time. It's who you like. My Personal favorites are Zakk Wylde, who plays with Ozzy, and has his own Band, The Black Label Society. My Other favorite. Jimmy Hendrix. Hendrix was a pioneer. Ever see him on the old video clips? He was a left handed guitarist, who played a Right handed guitar upside down. Give Vai, Satriani, Yngwie, Eddie, or any other of the "best" that have been mentioned, and see if they can play a left handed axe upside down to experience what Hendrix did.

Depends, I have to go with David Gilmore because he plays the music I like best. For live performance I'd have to go with Hendrix or Garcia. Although Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Yng.. Malmsteen, might be better technically, I've never heard anything from them I could sing along with. I saw Satriani in 2005, he was fantastic, sounded just like the albums, but he still can't hold a candle to a good live Jerry performance. Jerry Garcia never played the same thing the same way twice, but it always sounded right.
If I was going to put together a jam band, I'd want Jerry Garcia. If I was going to the studio, I'd want Gilmore.
This all might just be the buzz talking...

Not to many can compete with Mr. Vai. Some would say Eddie Van Halen. He's pretty good. But still. Steve Vai Rips.

Jimi Hendrix
Joe Satrianni would be No.2 as he is the teacher of Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson.

I would have to agree about Vai but in my book he shares the number 1 spot with Randy Rhoads.

Toss up between Jimi Hendrix, Laura Chavez or Stevie Ray Vaughn. I'm a chick and she's my homey so I'll say Laura Chavez. Google her and go see her, you'll agree.
