4x4 fine in the snow going forwards or backwards but stopping is as difficult as in any other car. Problem is many drivers of 4x4 think they are indestructable and driving gods even in adverse weather. The facts are they are often than not poor drivers that have never learned how to use there car.

4x4 vehicles have the advantage of forward traction in most conditions, but turning, depends on the driver, the rear wheels can push the car so that the front wheels have less effective influence in turning the vehicle and changing direction, or if the centrifugal inertia advantages the rear of the vehicle to overtake the front, its all about driving skills, and driving conditions, and the end result can be save yourself or end in the ditch, but by experience, if i end up in the ditch, i' d rather have a 4x4 to try to get out.

They are better for diving WELL in the snow, they do not compensate for BAD driving habits. I use my 4WD in the snow because when I am engine braking, there are two wheels grabbing the road instead of one and there is always the option of using the low range gearing.
Unfortunately, there are some who feel invincible in their 4WD and get into trouble by going too fast and cannot stop quickly enough when they encounter trouble.

People who most loudly complain about large SUVs think better of them as they are being pulled from a ditch by one.

SUV's have a higher per vehicle crash percentage. There higher center of gravity is bad! easier to flip and higher up means more wind to catch if its windy out. Most of the time its just the person being an idiot thinking that they have a big tough 4x4 and they realize that it only makes a difference in acceleration and driving through snow at low speed. I have an AWD 93 eagle talon that I use as my winter rat and that thing will go through just as much as most SUVs and it will just about never flip, same with most Subaru cars. But they do not stop any better than an car in snow! Hope this helps

Yes it would seem 4 wheels spinning on ice with no traction would be better than 2 wheels spinning on ice.
problem is people do not use common sence. they think just because they have a 4x4 that they can drive faster. And it is proven that suv's are much more tippy. so therefor they flip over onto the roof a lot more easy where as other vehicles will just colide up right.
my sister flipped hers too.
I stick with my 1989 dodge shadow.

Because the driver is an idiot and over drove the conditions. You can get to more places and go through more snow with a 4x4 but everything has its limits. This person went pass the limits of their truck. If you drive a 4x4 right you can go just about anywhere

A lot of people are under that semi-false pretense, 4X4 do handle better in the snow, but you HAVE to KNOW how to handle a 4x4. A lot of people who own them DO NOT KNOW HOW TO OPERATE THEM. There is a big difference in handling... Those are the one's who end up in the ditches...

4X4 is great for getting moving. It does nothing for stopping. Also, the higher centre of gravity means that is is more likely to skid off the road on a curve, and more likely to flip over when it does skid. It can get you places that a car can't go - but only at VERY low speeds.

I'll stick to my car, I think.

Four wheel drive gets better locomotive traction in snow, but the braking traction is no better than two wheel drive vehicles, because all vehicles have four wheel brakes. An inherent danger of four wheel drive is that it gives drivers a false sense of security, so they drive with wild abandon in snow.

are you asking why? because people forget that a 4X4 brakes and corners the same or even worse as any other vehicle in the snow. and the go too fast for conditions.

4x4 are great for not getting stuck in snow. esp. deep snow.
