I agree with Greybeard. If you can stay in a tent or a van near the beach that's all the kids need. They love to spend hours in and around the water.

Another cheap holiday would be a farmstay. Kids just want to get in touch with nature.

Of course, if your kids are teenagers, the beach may or may not still appeal to them. An unusual idea for a holiday is to stay home and use the money you would've used for a holiday to renovate. Teenagers love to redecorate their room and fit it out with stuff they are interested in. They will have a great sense of achievement from having prepared the walls, painted them, reorganising their stuff, selling old stuff at the local market, changing their curtins and doona cover.

Do take time off while you're doing this to spend time together as a family at tourist attractions around your home. Go to all the places you never do because you say you can do it anytime.

They say a change is as good as a holiday!

Yep some pple are assuming you live in the UK, prolly because you say holiday and not vacation, if that is so you will know that holidays in the UK are a rip off, just like foreign holidays in school holiday time. Best thing to do is lie to the school and take the kids on a cheap package in school time, try teletext, there are some on text now stretching a few days past the official break, at almost cost price, you can even try negotiating like I do, check out the first one advertised, get all the details, then look for the same holiday from another text page, say you saw it cheaper, look like you know what your talking about, and beat the price down, its surprisingly easy. Now tell me you live in the States !!

You don't say which country you live in, so I'm guessing it's the UK. When Gracie and I took the Kid's away many years ago, a good cheap holiday was in a static caravan by the seaside, Great Memories!

Try a camping holiday or overnight near a lake. Organize a short race (styled like Amazing Race) for the kids, I'm sure they'll love it.
