A: The North And South Were what The Nations of Europe will be like in The First World War. People were thinking of it as a adventer and the war would be short and be home in time for Christmas

B. Both states were sending troops to both side also they were a buffer zone between the North and South. The North had to hold the border state of Maryland because of Washington D.C
in Southern Maryland.

C. North was more aggressive, Attack and take Richmond. Later they adopt a strategy of attrition. Blockade the Southern Ports, Take Control of Mississippi River to cut the west from the east, and finally take Richmond the Capital of the South.

The South will fight defense and wait till the North give up.

a. The North felt it treason and betrayal that the confederates fired on fort Sumter. The confederates felt as though it was an invasion. Although there were pro-union organizations down south throughout the war.

b. The border states were full of people who sympathized with one side or the other. They were tipping scales that could fall to the North or South at any time. take a look at Missouri and Maryland. (Maryland itself might have joined the confederates had it not been for the presense of union soldiers there.)

c. The north wanted to choke the south out and make it's armies retreat. But later on the North decided on complete domination of the south and to destroy any southern army left. (such as how Grant fought Lee and Sherman's invasion stradegy.) The south needed key victories in order to be recognized by other nations as an independant country. The confederacy was also on defense so it had to wade the storm out and hold ground to win.
