I would go to limewire, but the only risk is that it's illegal and some of the songs are live or recorded from the radio... i think yahoo jukebox is free... or $5 a month which is good...

if you want the leagal route you can try download.com they offer music from up and coming unsigned artists that offer free mp3s they have a lot of variety and some of the bands are really good, but you wont find any known bands which is propably what you are looking for.
