I'm amazed that almost every question or answer on this website has misspelled words and really bad grammar. Sometimes I can't even understand the question. I'm not saying I have the best grammar either, but I'm pretty sure you guys can understand me.

I agree! As an English major, it makes me cringe. However, it doesn't bother me if I can at least understand the question.

Apparently they are not using the spell check that is provided. For some, they write how the word sounds. There has been a study conducted that indicates a person can actually read a word as long as it begins with the correct letter and ends with the correct letter. Our brains do not recognize every letter in a word.

I was actually sent a message just today from a friend, and it had an entire paragraph of incorrectly spelled words, and I read it with no problem.

The sad fact is that so many people either do not care that something is misspelled or they just dash off a note without spell check. It has always amazed me that with computers today and spell check that even the most illiterate among us can correct their spelling, IF they took the time.

I think that people generally let their standards down some, on-line. In a world of Instant and Text Messaging I think the emphasis is taken off being gramatically correct.

I know lots of people who speak perfect English in person, but who do a lot of short-cuts, leave out punctuation, etc. on the Internet.

Some care, and some don't! :-)

Then again, a few are probably really poorly educated souls who spend all their time on the Internet. :D

I know, it's disgusting. People don't care anymore if they're speaking English. If you're talking with your friends and you opt to nix some grammar and some spelling, that's one thing, but when it gets to the point that I have to read your question 5 times in order to begin to make some sense out of it, it's enough already. It drives me crazy. I find myself more inclined to respond and correct their spelling and grammar than answer their questions.

Yes, it is amazing. Especially since there is spell-check directly above their typing. Allot of it is text speak though. So many people get used to abbreviating everything while texting on their phones, it's like no one knows how to spell a real word anymore.

I never bought into the idea that web pages and emails let you skip ordinary grammar. I guess if some people aren't being graded on their grammar, they don't use it.

Personally, I'm a super-liberal person when it comes to grammar and slang and things of that ilk (I don't use grammar rules that make no sense, like not splitting infinitives) but whatever. I still use grammar rules in writing. There's a way to combine good grammar and personal expression to make things clear and coherent but still in your own voice.

But people are lazy, I guess. I try to focus on my own bidness and ignore other people's mistakes...but it still gets to me sometimes.

Because we alowed the liberal hippies to overrun the educational system. It doesn't matter that Johnny cannot read... only that he looks like he might be trying to learn to read. In modern education it is truly the thought that counts. More teachers in service, more money thrown in than ever, and...well too much warm and fluffy filler being taught that good hard academics.

I get your point. As a high school junior, if I can use mostly fair grammar and spell things correctly, then others should be able to manage it.
