type the number with area code first like so;

more specific to the provider;
T-Mobile: xxxyyyzzzz@tmomail.net
Virgin Mobile: xxxyyyzzzz@vmobl.com
Cingular: xxxyyyzzzz@cingularme.com
Sprint: xxxyyyzzzz@messaging.sprintpcs.com
Verizon: xxxyyyzzzz@vtext.com

Mail server speaks a different language (SMTP)... I believe you can send messages via web if you go to the website of the particular carrier the phone belongs to...

You can go to http://tmobile.com/ .And search text.Or if available go to who ever is your provider
