hi i have two kids,im a father. i am pretty much an expert besides my wife. dilating doesnt have anything to do with the pain killer.
if you are experiancing labor pains count the time inbetween the labor pains if they get with in a couple of minutes then i suggest you go to the hospital. dilation can go from where its at now to a full ten in seconds or hours depending on your body. if you get an epidural make sure you time it right, i say this because my first kid my wife got the epidural at the beginning of labor it wore off during birth, the second kid we waited till she was almost there then got it and it was fine. i really hope this answers your question.
thank you

I'm not sure but here's my experience, I went to my regular prenatal appointment and found out I was 7cm dilated then I went to the hospital and got an epidural about 45min later. Also where I live they wont admit you until you're 4cm. So I would guess anytime after that. Make sure you get their when your contractions are 5min apart you will have enough time to get the epidural. Once you get to 8-9cm dilated they wont give you an epidural.

There are some non informant answers in here. I was dilated only 3cm before epidural. I was over due. It all depends on the situation. I had planned on natural child birth and they even induced labor. I was in pain, but not dilating. I went thru an emergency c-section. They gave the epidural about an hour after contractions started.

don't count on getting the epidural. I thought for sure I would get pain meds and when I got to the hospital my baby's heartbeat was too low and there were no drugs allowed for me. That certainly was a shocker they didn't tell me about! Good luck!

it's usually about 4 cm for them to get the epidural started.
Good luck to you and congrats on the coming baby

You won't be admitted before you're at least 4 cm dilated and contracting regularly.
