i am the mother of three children, one is aged 2 yrs and the other 2 are 16 and 18 yrs...
i gave them all water! and they all lived LOL
in my opinion, it is best to give your baby about 4 ounces of water just before bed to make sure there is no lasting milk residue in his mouth (which can affect forming teeth at this age and up)
this will help to get him used to drinking water so that when he is off the formula or breast milk, he will be receptive to drinking it. all babies need water- milk just isn't enough.
at four months old, mine were also ALL on cereal- even tho the dr and WIC said not to-- they were hungry! (so i fed them)
doctors are just PRACTICING medicine... i hope one day they get it right!

When my son was a baby the nurses told me he could have a little bit of sterile water. Just fix up some water in a bottle and sterilize or boil and cool.
I think babies enjoy a drink of water now and then but don't let the child drink too much. They need hydration just like adults and if the child is ill then sterile water might be good.

There is really no need for a 4 month old to have water, they need only breast milk or formula till 6 months unless your doctor has told you other wise.

It isn't bad to give a four month old water as long as you are also feeding it breastmilk or formula . I know it isn't bad because when we were on our 10 hour super hot and humid trip to flee hurricane rita we fed the babies water in order to keep them hydrated. I think water actually helps keep babies hydrated but i believe you should limit water intake to 4-8 ounces.

Is your baby on breast or formula? If breast they don't need water. If formula boiled water. I just fill up a bottle and give it to my baby throughout the day. I don't worry to much if he doesn't drink a lot providing he is eating and drinking milk.

bottled or tap? there are normally a lot of chemicals in tap water so i definitely dont recommend that, it can cause a lot of different things, such as blue baby syndrome if there is nitrate in it. or even copper can cause colic...
however they need calories and nutrients right now. so that will only be given to your baby by the formula or breast milk. they say 6-7 months, but if you just give the baby water in between feedings that is fine. just don't use it as the meal in replacement for the formula.

The baby only needs breast milk or formula until at least 6 months. A 4 month old needs nothing else. :)

If he is breastfed, there is no need. Unless he is having trouble with constipation, I wouldn't think he'd need the water. Actually, it may fill him up and take away from his milk consumption. So, if you do give him some, make sure he is still getting plenty of feedings in.

Your baby will get all the fluids he needs through breast milk or formula. You don't need to worry about water.
