Dr's have DXed my Newborn with Breast Milk Jaundice. But no one can give me any answers. It dosent seem as though they know what it is.

Do you know what it is?
Or what causes it?
Have any of your babies ever have it?

Any information will be great.

My baby was diagnosed with jaundice at 2 days old. He was treated with phototherapy for 48 hours and then the levels dropped enough so he could go home.

Here's some interesting facts:
"Jaundice occurs when excess bilirubin accumulates in the blood"
(bilirubin is a product of the breakdown of red blood cells)

"More than half of all newborns become jaundiced in the first week of life"

"water supplements can contribute to newborn jaundice"

Bilirubin is excreted in the stool, and a good treatment is to nurse more often.

If levels of bilirubin are high, the baby may be put under lights to break down the compound through the skin.

I hope this helps!

My son had jaundice when he was born. I breastfed him too. I was told there were many factors. The fact that he was a boy was one, and he was over 8 lbs. ( bigger babies), and I was induced when I had him, and breastfeeding is another reason that causes jaundice. Just get him lots of sun, and if it's not real warm where you're at, I'm sure the doctor will tell you if he needs a blue blanket or not. ( That's basically a blanket type thing that has the ultraviolet rays, like tanning.)

It is when the mother is lacking certain vitamins in her own diet that is passed to the baby. It is part of the reason why doctors prescribe multi-vitamins to both pregnant and lactating mothers. As well as vitamins to the baby. There are several vitamin dificiencies that would cause it. There are also several genetic disorders that can cause jaundice as well. None of my kids have had the breast milk jaundice, but I would not stop breast feeding because of it. There are so many benefits to both the mother and baby by breast feeding.
