3 credit hours means that the class is worth three quality points when calculating your cumulative and/or semester GPA. I am taking six classes this semester, and they are all 3 credit hours. I meet twice a week for each class. To take it one step further:

American Government: 3 Credit hours. Let's say I earn an "A". That means on a grading scale of A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 F=0, I have earned a total of 12 quality points. (3 x 4) Multiply the amount of credit the class is worth, with your letter grade in the class.

number of credit hours sort of loosely correlates with the amount of time in class each week but it also determines how much credit you receive towards graduation, and how much tuition the school charges for that course. The standard college course is usually 3 hours a week; something superhard like a chemistry lab might be 4 or 5 hours. If you take ethnic dance or arts and crafts and it only runs for half a semester, it might be 1 credit.

you mean 3 credit hours? It means that for each credit you take, you study for 2 hours outside of school...so if you take a 3 credit course/class you study six hours outside of class... Im taking 16 credits this semester so I should stuedy 32 hours outside of school each week, which is rediculous..Im doing fine in school 3.82 and i only study for about 10 hours a week

The "hours" of credit in a college course is supposed to refer to the number of hours per week it meets. Labs, practicals, and other related types of classes often aren't that cut and dried, however.

Your class meets for that number of hours each week. For three, that's most commonly 1 hour a day, 3 days a week.
