1. There is no species called an 'Alabama box turtle'- if it came from Alabama it is probably a Three-toed box turtle.

2. The generic ways to tell are:
MALES have longer, thinner tails with the vent opening about 1/2 down the tail and the plastron (belly shell) curves in.
FEMALES have short, wide tails with the vent near the base and flat or outcurved plastrons.

3. If a relative of the Eastern box turtle (like the Three-toed) has bright red or orange eyes, it is a male.

I raise and sell box turtles. This is how you determine the sex. A male turtle has a much longer, thicker tail than a female. When you turn the turtle upside down, notice whether the plastron (bottom shell) is perfectly flat, or if there is a slight "indent". If you find an indent you have a male-- this is indent is there for a reason. When two turtles mate, the male (entering the female from behind) needs this configuration to keep him from "falling off" the female during copulation. If his plastron was perfectly flat like the female, reproduction would be impossible. Hope this helps!

there are several ways, if it is adult the male will have red eyes the female has brown eyes, the bottom of the females shell is flat where the male's is indented, a male has a longer tail but if you have noone else to compare with then you can't tell how long the tail is, usually males have more body coloring than females
