some older computers don't have an ethernet port - but i think you can get one installed easy

perhaps your computer has a modem, try putting it in there, see if it works

You must plug the ethernet cable into either a router or directly into a modem's ethernet port. When I got my 360 it came with a free trial of gold, I'm not sure if it still does or not.

The xbox 360 opening for the ethernet cable is in the back, on the top, if its standing upright, and it should fit right into your router in the back. Just keep trying things, trial and error aways works.

First of all you get a month free on xbox live. There are ways to get 3 months free but thats another storie.

The cable you are talking about is an eathernet cable. It is used to push data along at 100mb/s wich is good for online gaming. Any way this cable goes in to a port on your wirless router and/or your cable modem.
If you only have one import on you modem there are spliters that will allow you to have 5-100 inputs. (5 is fine).
They are avalble to buy at the store listed below.
Note: you must have a 56kb/s internet (no dial up)
